Types of California alimony
There are two main types of spousal support in California:

Permanent spousal support
A spouse can also seek permanent spousal support, where the goal is to ensure that the spouse is able to maintain the same standard of living enjoyed during the marriage. Some of the key factors considered when awarding permanent spousal support include the following:
- Duration of the marriage
- Age, health, and needs of each party
- Earning capacity of each party and their ability to pay

- Respective levels of education

However, it is unusual for any judge to order genuinely permanent support unless the supported spouse has a physical or mental disability, or is too old to seek employment. Instead, the spouse seeking support must attempt to become self-supporting as the amount of support is gradually reduced over time.
